For many exporters, the use of documentary, more often known as “draft,” collections is limited by a lack of knowledge of this important trade term. This session will explore the draft collection trade tool from a number of perspectives important to the credit manager, who maintains a keen interest in sales facilitation. Besides reviewing how collections work from a document and funds flow perspective, the presenter will demonstrate how to use draft collections effectively to reduce/minimize risk in any given sales situation, how to reduce associated banking fees, enhance cash flow and improve buyer relations. Further, we will explore how this trade term may be used to reduce insurance costs and how it may be used as a customer financing vehicle. Finally, we will discuss some of the problems inherent in its use including archaic bank pricing policies in some markets and buyer reluctance to accept this term.
